Canada’s “The Help List” supports recently laid-off workers find new opportunities
Over the last few months, we’ve seen a number of companies announcing layoffs. These have ranged from household names to barely–heard–of start-ups, but they all have one thing in common: feeling the pinch of recent economic times, they’ve had to re-evaluate how and where they’re spending.
Rising inflation, the Russia/Ukrainian war, and increased interest rates have all contributed to the market downturn and imminent recession, effecting tech companies and start-ups globally. Since the start of the year, investors have turned away from the technology sector, adding to the strain for up-and-coming companies in this industry.
Since Klarna started the trend, sharing a list of its recently laid-off workers, many companies have jumped on the bandwagon to try and help their former employees find new jobs. In Canada, one company, Communitech, has gone one step further. Originally created to help laid-off workers in the COVID-19 pandemic, The Help List has been relaunched to help Canadian workers effected in the latest wave of tech layoffs.
Those on the list provide details including name, location, key skills, former job title, and their personal LinkedIn URLs. The List exists to help these workers find new roles in other Canadian tech companies. Since the start of 2022, over 250 people have already added their names. As word spreads, this list is sure to grow.
Many of those adding their names come from a number of Canadian companies who have laid-off staff over the last few months. These companies include:
