In 2006, the Vestry of Calvary Episcopal Church, N.L., now Calvary St. Augustine Episcopal Church, founded STEP-CDC in response to the pressing education, recovery and housing needs in the adjacent community. Beginning with its founding in 1864, Calvary Church has enjoyed a rich legacy of reaching out to the poor and the marginalized in its community. For years, Calvary has hosted numerous activities, such as feeding programs, Boy Scout troops, a Day-care Center, afterschool programs among a list of other community services. STEP~CDC has three streams of work. They are education, recovery and housing. The board created mission statements for each stream. Education Program: The Education Program provides school-aged children, in the Belmont community, with a safe environment as well as engaging educational opportunities afterschool and during the summer. It also offers training to adults in order to help them to become college and career-ready, thereby making them assets to their community. Recovery Program: named Steps to a New Beginning (SNB): SNB supports individuals and families in the Belmont Community through programs that raise awareness about the connection between substance abuse and limited life options. It also supports residents of the community prevent and recover from substance abuse and limited life options. Housing Program: The Housing Program was established to evaluate disparities in available housing for residents within the Belmont Community and to assist them in gaining affordable housing in a secure environment.
